For our first post, I just wanted to mention that we believe in Phonics First.
Who is we? I’m posting this (Liz), but we is Donald Potter and Elizabeth Brown.
Between us, we have tutored for over 30 years, tutoring hundreds of students. We have found that phonics first, no sight words, and syllables is a powerful combination. We hope to use the power of the 21st century (computers) to unleash the power of the 18th century (teaching reading with Spellers and Syllables.)
Between us, we have tried out scores of different phonics methods. This blog will share what we have learned. We invite you to share your phonics successes, whether you teach 1 or 100.
We dedicate this site to Geraldine E. Rodgers, whose writings helped us clarify our own thinking about phonics and gave us the courage to try syllables on our students.
Love this blog. May I suggest a starter book for phonics entitled “Words Aren’t Fair” You can find it plus reviews on Amazon. The book is being used locally for beginning readers and dyslexic readers.
